We are committed to providing personalized pediatric surgical care for children of all ages.
Pediatric surgical care
We provide leading-edge surgical procedures to meet the unique needs of children and teens. Our doctors are recognized by their peers, locally, regionally and even globally, for their ability to deliver effective pediatric treatments with positive outcomes.
This is due, in part, to our surgeons’ unparalleled experience and innovation with minimally invasive techniques, which potentially reduce pain, hospital stays, recovery time and scarring. The team is always finding new ways to update techniques and processes to reduce the impact of surgery on the body by expanding the capabilities of minimally invasive surgery.
Because minimally invasive surgery is so important to our program, we have helped design a pediatric-specific minimally invasive operating suite where we perform our procedures. These procedures are always performed using the least invasive option that is medically safe. Some of the surgical treatments we perform include:
Neonatal surgery
Our surgical teams repair congenital abnormalities, including congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM). We also treat esophageal atresia (EA) and other neonatal and perinatal disorders.
Pediatric general surgery
We treat hernias, including inguinal hernias, umbilical hernias and epigastric hernias. Our surgical teams also perform hernia repair and build treatment plans for gastrointestinal (GI) disorders.
Chest wall abnormality correction
A chest wall abnormality occurs when there is a structural deformity of the chest. This can develop in two ways:
- Pectus excavatum: In this case, the chest bone dips inward. Some people call this a ‘funnel’ or ‘sunken’ chest. Affecting about 1 in 300 children, this is the most common type of chest wall deformity.
- Pectus carinatum: This occurs when the breastbone protrudes and can be referred to as ‘pigeon chest.’ This condition affects about one in 1,000 children. Both affect more boys than girls.
While these conditions are present at birth, they are often not recognized until adolescence. The conditions, especially pectus excavatum, may affect breathing during exercise, respiratory infections, asthma and the development of scoliosis.
Treatments for chest wall deformity
Treatment depends on how significant the deformity is, and how much it is affecting health and self-esteem. Once we have a proper diagnosis, we work with you and your family to create a treatment plan based on your unique needs, goals and lifestyle. Our team will always begin with nonsurgical options first as long as they are effective. Often, pectus excavatum will require surgery for treatment, while pectus carinatum can be treated successfully with custom bracing.
Custom bracing for pectus carinatum
At our practice, individuals with pectus carinatum can be fitted for a completely customized brace that can be worn to correct the deformity. Once the brace is made to match your child's unique anatomy, it is given to the family for the patient to wear under clothing for 24 hours a day for 6 months to a year. Often initiated just before a growth spurt, around ages 10-15, the brace will gently guide the structures back into the proper placement without significant pain or trauma to the patient.
