Neurological care

Neurological care is the practice of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and function of diseases relating to the nerves and nervous system. Neurologists and neurosurgeons treat disorders that affect the brain or spinal cord.

Our neurology services

Through diagnostic exams and specialized treatments, our professionals will give you their undivided attention in a purposeful way.

Diagnosing brain and spine conditions

Defining the root cause of your symptoms is vital in establishing an effective treatment plan. As a result, we employ a wide range of advanced exams to determine the most accurate diagnosis possible. Our specialists may perform a computerized tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), spinal tap or ultrasound to evaluate the contributing factors of your condition closely.

Electrodiagnostic testing

Our neurologists use electromyography (EMG) testing, also known as a nerve conduction study, to help identify conditions in the spinal nerve roots, peripheral nerves and muscles. During this exam, electrodes are applied to your body so we can record the real-time electrical activity in your muscles as well as the nerve cells that control them. This information not only helps our neurologists determine the health of your muscles and nerve cells, but it also aids in identifying the disorders you may be dealing with, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or peripheral neuropathy.

Treating neurological disorders

Our neurology specialists are committed to providing you with the very best treatment options available. We use many different types of modalities in our care plans, including surgical and non-surgical options. A few of our treatments include:

Advanced epilepsy treatment

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which abnormal brain activity triggers recurring seizures. In addition to seizures, your side effects can also include muscle spasms, loss of consciousness, irregular behavior and varying emotions. Our top-notch epilepsy programs provide a comprehensive treatment regimen for all ages.

Offering both adult and pediatric neurological care, we recognize that you or your child may have a different experience with varying brain and spine conditions than others — including epilepsy — which is why we approach each unique case with a personalized plan that often combines prescribed medication with recommended lifestyle adjustments. If you or someone you know is dealing specifically with refractory seizures, we also evaluate for advanced treatment options, such as procedures we offer in our neurosurgery program.

Botulinum toxin therapy (BoNT)

BoNT injections, commonly known as Botox, can be used to treat patients with conditions like cervical dystonia, blepharospasm (spasms of the eyelids) and spasticity. For this procedure, we inject a neurotoxin protein to a targeted area to block the nerve signals that are causing your muscle spasms.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS)

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure we use to help with debilitating neurological conditions, such as Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. During your DBS procedure, a small device is implanted in your brain and chest. This device functions as a “brain pacemaker,” sending electrical signals to regulate the symptoms of your condition.

Neuromodulation

Often referred to as neurostimulation, neuromodulation is a technology we use to strategically target affected areas of your nervous system with electrical impulses. This surgical procedure is designed to correct any abnormal signals that could be causing your chronic pain. During the neuromodulation process, a brief trial period is conducted prior to connecting an implantable pulse generator (IPG) to electrodes on your peripheral nerves.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS)

Another one of our minimally invasive procedures, vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an effective treatment for epilepsy and seizure disorders. A small device is implanted by our experts during this VNS process, stimulating your vagus nerve with electrical impulses that work to regulate your symptoms.
