Limb lengthening and reconstruction services
We offer surgical procedures that are evidence-based methods for addressing arm and leg abnormalities.
Diagnosing limb abnormalities
Our team conducts a thorough physical examination, gets details about your medical history and frequently uses imaging to make an accurate diagnosis.
We might ask you to move the affected arm, leg or foot in certain ways during the physical examination. This exam might also involve your doctor feeling or manipulating the limb to see if they can make any conclusions based on touching it.
Imaging and laboratory testing are critical for not only seeing what is going on internally but also to help us understand any potential risks or other issues you might have with your bones.
The sophisticated imaging and laboratory tests we use include:
- Bone scans
- Computerized tomography (CT) scans
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans
- Vascular testing
- X-rays
Types of limb reconstruction surgery we offer
Our team creates customized plans for you to address conditions like amputations that might incorporate several treatments. Some of the procedures we offer include:
- Bone transport — filling in a missing section of bone with replacement bone to encourage growth in the gap
- Correction of malalignment — putting bones back in alignment to allow for better mobility
- Limb lengthening — cutting a bone that's too short and inserting a device that moves the two ends of the bone away from each other, encouraging new bone to grow in the gap
Bone cancer limb reconstruction
If you have bone cancer in any of your limbs, you might need to get tumors removed to preserve your arm, leg or foot. Sometimes, we also need to remove surrounding tissue if it's diseased or damaged. After the tumors have been removed, we can reconstruct your affected limbs and restore as much of its function as possible.
Pediatric limb reconstruction
Knowing your child needs surgery can feel overwhelming, but we treat them with gentle care and compassion. This is especially true when our specialists work with newborns. In addition to taking a delicate approach, we find the least invasive method to help your child.
