Medications prescribed for home

Stay well-informed about your postoperative medication dosages and timing after discharge.

It is important to pay close attention to your medications prescribed by your surgeon. Below are some tips for those medications. If you have specific questions please message your surgeon on the patient portal.

For Pain

Narcotics: You will likely be prescribed one of the following narcotic pain medications:

  • Dilaudid (hydromorphone), Oxycodone, Norco (hydrocodone/acetaminophen), or Percocet (oxycodone/acetaminophen)
  • Take 1-2 pills every 4-6 hours as needed for pain

**If you had a nerve block, stay on top of the pain medication even if you do not have pain. Once the block wears off, we want to prevent as much pain as possible**

Anti-inflammatories: naproxen, ibuprofen, diclofenac, Celebrex, meloxicam

  • You will be prescribed one of the above medications
  • Take as directed on the prescription
  • Take this every day as directed, not just as needed, for at least the first 2 weeks
  • (naproxen/ibuprofen is available over the counter)

Tylenol (acetaminophen) 650 mg

  • 1 pill every 6 hours
  • Take this scheduled every 6 hours, not just as needed, for at least the first 2 weeks (available over the counter)
  • Note: Tylenol is already a part of Percocet and Norco. Make sure not to exceed 4,000 mg of acetaminophen per day.

For Nausea

Zofran (ondansetron) 4 mg

  • 1 sublingual tablet (dissolves under tongue) every 6 hours as needed for nausea

For Constipation

Senna (sennosides/docusate) 8.6/50 mg

  • 1 pill every 12 hours as needed for constipation (available over the counter)
  • If you prefer another stool softener, that is okay to use instead or in addition if needed

To prevent blood clots

Aspirin 81 mg

  • I pill twice daily for 4 weeks to prevent blood clots
  • Only prescribed for certain patients/procedures (available over the counter)
  • Some patient may be prescribed a different medication to prevent blood clots. Take as directed on your prescription.
